Carnival is the biggest holiday in Brazil. The whole country stops for about a week and festivities are whole renouned for being very ellaborate and sexy, as well as day and night parties. Seventy percent of all brasilian tourism comes for Carnival where, about 80 perecent of the anunal consumption is consumed in this week long holiday. With the government having to hand out condoms to spread sexual awarness of the risk of AIDS. I guess there really is no sin below the equator!
Carnival is the Annual festival held 46 days before Easter. It differs from state to state in brasil. Most the big parades are ment to be watched by the people in costal cities like Rio, where smaller towns have parades called Blocos that envolve the public participation.
This is a "Bloco" carnival form la mancha spain. Its sort of the same idea as the brasilian carnival were the public gets to participate by dressing up, dancing and drinking with there friends.
My country is Mexico and they too host carnivals prior to the start of lent. Even though every country may run their carnival differently, the meanings behind the event are universal. I veiw carnivals as a way for the people to let go of their struggles with reality. The carnival helps to paint a person's fantasy world by having little boundaries set and no social order seen in sight. The poor can have just has much fun as the rich. The carnivals also serve as a time where people can get all of their craziness out before they sacrifice during the period of lent. People are able to let loose and show the world who they really are, and no matter what country is hosting the carnival, the universal meaning and feeling goes through everyone.
